In the 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with wood-molding techniques that used thin sheets of wood veneer to construct a wide range of shapes. Those experiments have had a profound effect on the world of design, giving way to the Molded Plywood Lounge Chair, LCW (1946). One of the most innovative and influential designs of the 20th century, the LCW is constructed of eight- and five-ply molded plywood, with a contoured seat and back. The Eameses experimented with a number of exotic woods while creating their iconic plywood furniture. And now DWR and Herman Miller are honoring this tradition with a special edition LCW in santos palisander veneer. Sustainably harvested, santos palisander is a Brazilian rosewood with a distinct and highly varied grain pattern. During the first year of production the santos palisander LCW will come with a commemorative medallion on the bottom and a certificate of authenticity.
